Busou Renkin

Busou Renkin is a show about Kazuki Muto, a boy whose heart has been replaced by a magical stone that can turn into a lance. He uses said lance to fight monsters that eat humans.  That show is a personal favorite of mine. Kazuki has a group of wacky friends that can keep the show light enough in between the life-and-death battles. It handles the whiplash between the two quite nicely.

Another thing I love about this show is the weapons. As the show is named after them (the title translates to ‘Arms Alchemy’), there is a wide array of unique and interesting weapons.  These includes the hero’s lance (it can shoot itself foreword like a rocket), a trench coat that turn into armor when hit, a ninja sword that can cut holes in space, flying gunpowder that can spontaneously combust, and an axe that can control gravity.

This show has many similarities to Bleach; an ordinary high school student gets thrown into a world of monster slaying by a girl. These monsters eat humans, and they go from monstrous, to human-like monsters before they switch to straight up humans. The interesting weapons are also similar to the released zanpakuto. Like Bleach, the fight scenes are excellent.  The one problem I have is with some of the creepy outfits of Papillon, (a flamboyant male monster with a butterfly mask and a love of revealing outfits).  He even fights in one battle in a Speedo. Fortunately, his main outfit is moderately tasteful. If you like Bleach, you will probably like Buso Renkin.
